How was the Blue Lagoon created?

Many people think that Blue Lagoon in Iceland is another natural hot spring that was simply adapted for tourists' needs. There are hundreds of those in Iceland! And this one is just another example, but larger and with more facilities, right? Well, that is not entirely right, though.

Close by the Lagoon, the Svartsengi geothermal power plant is located. The steam coming out from the inside of the earth is used to heat the water needed to keep the power station functioning. The excess had to be stored somewhere, so it was collected in the nearest lava field, hoping it would evaporate over time. The opposite happened, and the result is this artificial lake.

As the water is rich in minerals, the best choice was to make a geothermal spa taking advantage of the water's properties. Now, there are 9mln liters of water in Blue Lagoon, whose temperature oscillates between 37-40 degrees celsius.

The water of the Blue Lagoon has a unique composition of minerals. It contains algae and silica. The Silica mud mask is the most popular facial treatment most visitors use it while in the spa! It improves any skin condition, and the effects reflect immediately. These waters are a perfect treatment for skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne. As you can see, it is not only about leisure time but also about health.

If you are planning a visit to the Blue Lagoon, you should definitely book your tickets in advance. Make sure that you show up at the place ahead of time as longs queues are a common thing here.

Make sure you have enough time to visit the Blue Lagoon. This place has much more to offer than just a retreat spa. You will be able to enjoy the silica mud masks, saunas and steam rooms, and a water bar where you can get a drink or a sparkling wine. There is also an artificial cave where you can relax and chill out.

You can also request a water massage or spent some time in the relaxation zone with a great view of the Lagoon. The water massage can last from 30 minutes to 2 hours. If you are planning to have one, make sure you book it in advance, as they are usually fully booked. There is very little chance you can get an appointment if you want to have it on the same day.

If you are planning to visit the Lagoon in winter, you might have a chance to watch the Northern Lights, while relaxing in the warm waters. There is no better place to enjoy this Mother Nature's show.

The Blue Lagoon offers an excellent restaurant built on a lava field, which is called Lava Restaurant. It is overlooking the Lagoon, and the view is pretty much mesmerizing. The restaurant is luxurious, and that can easily be seen in their prices. However, once in a while, you can treat yourself with a special meal, right?

Around 10 minutes away walking distance from the Blue Lagoon, you will find the Silica Hotel. If you wish to stay in the area longer and get access to the private Lagoon, this is the right place for you. The hotel is also perfect for romantic trips but also for family visits.

How to reach the Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon in Iceland is located in the Reykjanes peninsula near a small town called Grindavik. Getting to the Lagoon is quite easy. It is about 20 minutes' drive away from Keflavik International Airport and around 45 minutes' drive from Reykjavik.

The best way is to drive here with your rental vehicle. At the destination, you will have a large parking area where you can safely leave your car. The parking is quite spacious, so you should not worry about not getting a free spot even if you are traveling in a campervan.

If you decide to drop off your vehicle at the rental station first, and then enjoy the Blue Lagoon, several buses go from the airport directly to the Lagoon.

There are many companies offering day tours to Blue Lagoon. The starting point is from Reykjavik, which is the perfect option for those who booked their hotel there. Some tours offer a visit to the Lagoon as a stop of a more extensive itinerary, like the Golden Circle. Others are connected with some hiking or horse riding. You should choose the one which best suits your needs.
