Ready to explore Reykjavik and Iceland’s stunning landscapes in your camper or motorhome? Here are some tips for a smooth and enjoyable journey around Iceland’s capital.
Once you land and pick up your rental, head to Reykjavik (a quick 40-minute drive) to start your adventure! The city offers parking spots for larger vehicles, but be mindful of parking signs—some areas are resident-only, while others have time limits.
Reykjavik’s traffic is lighter than many capitals’ but can get busy during rush hours, especially on main routes. Roundabouts are common, and vehicles inside always have the right of way, a rule you won’t want to forget inIceland.
Although Reykjavik has a reliable bus system, your camper is going to give you way more freedom. If you still want to give public transport a shot, the Reykjavik City Card offers unlimited bus rides and discounts at top locations.
For day trips, your camper is the best bet! Discover the Blue Lagoon’s geothermal waters, visit the Bridge Between Continents, or explore the Reykjanes Peninsula’s volcanic landscapes, geysers, and hot springs. Enjoy every second and make your Icelandic journey unforgettable!
For exploring Reykjavik, a compact camper or van, like the Caddy or Kangoo, is ideal due to the ease of navigating city streets and parking in urban areas. These smaller vehicles are perfect for city driving while still offering all the amenities needed for your trip. If you plan to venture further outside Reykjavik on rougher roads, a 4x4 camper or a motorhome may be better suited for your journey.
If it’s your first time in Reykjavik, we recommend visiting Hallgrímskirkja Church for panoramic city views, the Harpa Concert Hall for its stunning architecture, and the Sun Voyager sculpture. A stroll along Laugavegur, Reykjavik’s main shopping street, is also a must. Finally, go for a soak in the Sky Lagoon, a one-of-a-kind oceanside geothermal lagoon that will blow your mind away!
Yes, insurance is highly recommended when driving in Reykjavik and along the Ring Road. Third-party liability insurance (CDW) is essential, but if you want additional coverage like Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) and Gravel Protection (GP), you can purchase our Platinum Insurance Package for peace of mind from day one.
The closest airport to Reykjavik is Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV), which mainly handles domestic flights and a few international routes to Greenland and the Faroe Islands. However, Keflavik International Airport (KEF), located about 45 minutes from the city center, is the main gateway for international travelers arriving in Iceland.
Parking in Reykjavik is reasonably priced compared to other European capitals. The city is divided into parking zones, with rates varying depending on proximity to the city center. The most expensive zones are around the downtown area, but as you move farther from the center, prices drop. Some areas also offer free parking at certain times of day.
You can check the Icelandic Met Office’s website (vedur.is) for up-to-date weather forecasts and alerts, and the Road and Coastal Administration website (road.is) for detailed road condition reports, including closures and hazards.
